Preparing your session...
What to expect during your session
Quite often, at the end of a session clients tell me “that sure didn’t feel like a photo session”. And that really is my main focus. You can expect it to be less about posing and more about interactions through carefully planned activities, games and plain old conversation. I’m just a normal person who likes to keep it real, with real people, to create real imagery. So, show up ready to just be you :)
Preparing your child
There’s really little you need to do here. Please know that I have very little expectations of your child/ren. And I mean that in the very best of ways. I do not expect your child to act like a professional model, or to want to participate the entire time (or even any of the time), and I don’t even expect them to behave the entire time. I’ve photographed countless children and I have three of my own and I fully understand that kids are all very different and unpredictable. I adjust my approach with every child based on their personalities and allow plenty of opportunities for breaks when they are needed.
⭐One thing that I do ask of all parents, grandparents or any other adults present, is to avoid the natural urge to assist in trying to gain the child's attention for the image. It’s really important that I am able to connect with your child one on one so that your child does not become overwhelmed with too much instruction, and so that we end up with images of your child looking directly towards the camera rather than to those gesturing off to the side.
What to bring
Bring along clean drinks and snacks and kleenex or baby wipes or any other items you think your child may need. Strollers are a good idea for those who use them as we tend to to a bit of walking around...plus they’re great for storing stuff in. You’re welcome to bring along any toys, books, instruments that has meaning to your child and would add to your images. Avoid bringing items that you do not want shown in your images such as soothers.
Location Choice
It’s best to start by deciding on a general theme or style you would like to have. After recognizing your general style I can make some great recommendations. Some of my favourite spots are the beach, at home or anywhere in nature.
What to wear
-
First pick a general theme of what you would like your images to look like. For a soft, dreamy look, go with soft pastels. For bright and dramatic go with bright and fun colours.
-
Moms...pick your own outfit first and style all other family members around you.
-
Coordinate colours with each other, do not match them. Pick one or two colours at most that is the same through a group.
-
Dress in layers to add texture and dimension to your images. Especially with kids, don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Tights or jeggings under a ruffled skirt, cardigans, scarves, hats, leg warmers etc for girls. For boys you can use sweaters, hats, suspenders, ties, belts. Make it fun.
-
Women should wear a tad bit more makeup than they normally would.
-
Pay close attention to details like hair and clean manicured hands.
-
Be prepared for wind and blowing hair if shooting at the beach.
-
Be sure that everyone is comfortable in their outfit, that it fits well and makes them feel confident.
Things to avoid
-
large logos
-
pure whites (use off white/ivory instead)
-
running shoes
-
matching outfits
F.A.Q.'s
Commonly Asked Questions and Concerns
Q. My child is extremely active, shy or hates to be photographed and i’m worried that they won’t cooperate during a photography session.
A. Most kids fall under at least one of these categories, it’s normal and i’m very used to working with it. This is one of the best reasons to hire a custom photographer who does not place time limits on sessions and allows for plenty of time to get to know each child, build a rapport and trust with them. The main focus in each session is to showcase your child for who they are and nothing else. Sometimes that means chasing a toddler all over the place, and sometimes it results in quieter, more peaceful images of your shy child.
Q. What happens if it rains on the day of my outdoor session?
A. We simply reschedule for another time that works for both of us. Sometimes that just means moving it by just a few hours. If the session cannot be rescheduled, we can work under pavilions, overhangs, covered porches or we can move the session into your home.
Q. How long does the session last?
A. As long as we need it to. I do not place time limits on any sessions. We simply go until we have everything we need and more. Normally this takes between 1 to 2 hours. Newborns can take up to three hours.
Q. Does the session fee include the digital copies of the images?
A. Yes. I know it's too hard to choose, you deserve them all.
