Planning your Maternity Session

Timing...

  • Maternity sessions are typically best scheduled between 30-36 weeks (7/8 months).
  • You know your body best and how you're developing/carrying so you are always the best judge. I'm flexible with rescheduling or bumping up sessions.
  • Outdoor maternity sessions are the best at the end of the day during the last hour or so before sunset during that famous "golden hour"
  • In home sessions are great late morning/early afternoon.

Location...

Some of my personal favourite locations for a maternity session are....

  • At home, in your own environment. Particularly perfect for more intimate images.
  • An open field during golden hour
  • the beach at golden hour

Who to bring...

  • All immediate family members are welcome and encouraged to participate. Bring your partner, your other children and fur babies if you wish.

What to wear...

  • Rule #1. Wear only things that you feel beautiful and comfortable in.
  • Long flowy dresses
  • Clothing that is form fitting around the belly that do not cause lines across the belly
  • In home sessions are great for more of an intimate look with robes, underthings, pyjamas, too small tees, open button down shirts etc.
  • Pamper yourself. Have your hair and make up done if you can. If not, spend a little extra time yourself. Manicure those hands (and feet if you'll be barefoot). Moisturize and exfoliate for glowing skin.

Planning your Newborn Session

My approach to newborn photography is very minimalist and natural focusing simply on the emotions and connections that are happening in your family during this time as well as capturing all the newness of your perfect newborn baby.

Newborn sessions happen in the comfort of home where you are free to relax, be yourself and enjoy the moment. Where older siblings are free to run off and play in between shots. We take as long as is needed to complete the session with no real time limits, although newborn sessions typically last 1-2 hours.

All immediate family members are encouraged to participate in the session, this is such an important time for all of you.

There really is very little you need to do to prepare for a newborn session, you have enough on your plate during those first few weeks, I don't want nor do I need to add to that. But, here are are few pointers that may help.

Timing...

  • The first week or two of babies life is generally best. Babies are typically still pretty sleepy and agreeable during this time.
  • Not all babies, new moms, families or circumstances are the same so that 2 week timeframe is just a guideline and not the rule.
  • I will schedule a tentative date for your newborn session and then once baby is born, we can touch base to see if that still works or not.

Prepping your home..

  • Your home does not need to be a spotless palace for your in home newborn session. A quick declutter of the area in which we will shoot is all we really need. So clear off side tables, shove the laundry pile in a corner and leave the dishes in the sink.
  • Areas of the home that are normally used are the living room, masterbedroom and nursery. OR, wherever I find the best natural light.
  • Open up your blinds and curtains
  • Keep the home warm so that baby is warm and comfy (particularly for bare skin images).
  • Play your favourite soft music, get your essential oil diffuser going, whatever makes you feel happy, peaceful and content, do that.

Prepping baby...

  • Just give babes a good feed, a burp and a fresh diaper right before the session and we are good to go.
  • At this stage, you're not likely on a real schedule yet so don't worry if baby is asleep or awake. Both are great!
  • Dress baby in whatever you'd like them in for the beginning of their session.

What to wear...

Baby...

  • Keep it simple. Think soft fabrics, neutral colours, onesies, swaddles. Preferably something that we can see babies cute little feet & toes in.

Mama

  • Also keep it simple. Soft fabrics and neutrals again.
  • Comfortable tees, tanks, dresses.
  • Showing skin to highlight mama/baby skin to skin time is beautiful. Tank tops and halters are great for this.
  • Try to find a little time to pamper yourself ahead of of the session. A little make up goes a long way after a sleepless night. Still aim for a natural look with hair and make up and nails.

Dad & Siblings

  • Follow the simple train. Neutral colours, soft fabrics. Choose colours and outfits that compliment what Mom is wearing.
